FROM BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK VOLUNTEER GARY NORED: I've started a new series of entries on my blog.  This one is a multi-part introduction to cacti of this area.  All cacti in this project are common and can be seen in the national park or Big Bend Ranch State Park.  No rarities or plants so limited in range that they would be very difficult to see.  When completed, the state park will be hosting a workshop on our regional cacti and on how to identify them.  Your reader's comments/criticisms are invited.  I'd like to make this series as accurate and relevant as I can.  The blog is on Wordpress at http://aneyefortexas.wordpress.com.

FROM ANONYMOUS DISSATISFIED AUDIENCE MEMBER: I attended the Terlingua school Christmas program last night and I was FLOORED by the utter disrespect from 90% of the audience.  The adults were talking, laughing, making plans; cell phones were ringing and being answered; children were unattended in the back of the room playing; kids were going in and out of the library throughout the entire performance.  It was so shameful to witness, and it happens every year.  These little people practice so hard; they're nervous; this is special to them, and they are so excited to put on a special play.  To have it ruined by disrespectful, rude and ignorant people is unacceptable.  I feel so sorry for them and the teachers that put in so much time.  If you can’t sit through a 30 minute production put on by children and keep your mouth shut…then STAY HOME.

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

TERLINGUA WORDOFF 2020.  Dust off your pencils, sharpen your tongues — Terlingua’s prodigious evening of storytelling is bounding ever forward.  Like a loose paddle at flood stage, it’s just around the bend — and you know you need it!  So grab on and spill a tale — it’s a Terlingua tradition!  Scheduled for February 13 at the one and only Cinnabar Theatre.  ¡VIVA TERLINGUA!  ¡VIVA LA VOZ!   See attached flyer for details and inspiration.

NEW YEAR’S DAY PEA OFF.  Jan 1: The annual Black-Eyed Pea Off in Terlingua is where West Texas folks gather to ring in the New Year.  For 30 years, this New Year’s Day tradition has unfolded on the Terlingua Ghost Town Porch.  There will be good food, pea judging, live music, a cake walk and a hot date raffle show.  A $5 donation buys you a bowl, spoon and cornbread.  Stick around for a songwriters’ salute at the Starlight Theatre beginning at 5 p.m.

EARTH AND FIRE GALLERY located in the Ghostown.  Guest artist Milwaukee-based artist Mark Wojno explores ideas and emotions of "stark beauty" through oil paintings of the Chihuahuan desert and industrial landscapes of Milwaukee and Chicago.  Originally trained as a cultural anthropologist, this mostly self-taught artist has always been sensitive to visual elements of different cultures.  Spending his time between Terlingua and Milwaukee, he depicts vast spaces and light punctuated by simple but dramatic built and natural forms, evoking a sense of solitude and silence. This pattern is especially evident in his representational landscapes of the Big Bend.
