The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that quarterly socials are starting in January 2019. The Chamber is calling for venue hosts, musicians, as well as food and beverage sponsors. The events will highlight topics that are relevant to responsible economic growth in Big Bend. A potential example of this would be a brief presentation followed by Q & A on how we can work together to preserve of our dark sky community. Big Bend Chamber of Commerce Socials will be fun networking opportunities to meet members, mingle with your community and to highlight different business, services, and musicians in town. Socials are free and open to the public. Donations welcome.

On Friday, November 16, St. James Episcopal Church will host several events to honor the memory of one of the founding fathers of Centering Prayer – a Christian form of meditation. At 11 a.m. a video showing of a 2007 interview with Fr. Thomas highlights his explanation of Centering Prayer as a spiritual journey as well as its long-term psychological benefits. This will be followed by personal remembrances and light refreshments. At noon, we will participate in Fr Thomas's celebration of life via live streaming, and follow it with a period of Centering Prayer. The entire Big Bend community is invited to come to any one part or all of this celebration to be held in St. James fellowship hall at 510 North 6th Street at Avenue A.

On veterans Day the VA will roll out a new VA.GOV web site that is supposed to be a vast improvement over the current one.

Taize, an ecumenical, contemplative service will be held at 5:30 pm on Sunday, November 18th, at St. James Episcopal Church located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. A soup, salad and bread supper will follow that is free and open to all.
Taize worship consists of meditative singing and periods of silence. This month’s universal reconciliation service will focus on readings and chants about Gratitude and Thanksgiving.  For more information, contact Kerie at apothokeri@hotmail.com

Oh, those eyes!  Taupe is looking for his forever home.  He is about 9 months old and is an incredibly handsome, medium-sized pup. Taupe is vaccinated and neutered. He is a strong boy with a lot of energy, so he would do best with an experienced dog owner or an active family. Taupe gets along with other dogs, but tends to play a little rowdy. He is very curious about cats and has shown no aggression towards them. Taupe has been great with the kids he has met, but he will need to learn more basic manners. He likes to jump, so you would need to supervise small children.  For more information, please contact the Marathon Animal Shelter at 432-386-4593.
