“When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money.” ~ Alanis Obomsawin

ADIOS JIMMY
Sadly, another Terlingua icon has departed us. This past week, Jimmy Holbrook of Passing Wind Ranch took his journey across the Great Divide after a long battle with cancer.  For many of us, Jimmy is perhaps best known as a decorated U.S. Marine who served with great distinction in the Vietnam War. For some, he was a constant fixture at the watering holes of Terlingua, goofing on his pals, and just being a happy-go-lucky guy.  Others sat with him in deep contemplation at the Catholic Church in Presidio where he dutifully went every Sunday to set himself straight with God.  Jimmy was always willing to lend a helping hand or a kind word.  He loved a good party, a stiff drink, and a funny story. Jimmy helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Terlingua Fire and EMS during his annual "rocket fuel" parties - named in honor of a cocktail he invented during his bartending days on Fire Island, New York.  No matter how you may have come to know him...if so, you were very lucky.  He was always a true friend.  Vaya con Dios, amigo....
Donations in memoriam can be made to Terlingua Fire and EMS.

LOST MINE TRAIL CLOSURE
Big Bend National Park has temporarily closed the popular Lost Mine Trail in the park’s Chisos Mountains area due to “increased bear activity.”
The park said in a press release the closure would begin Friday evening (October 14), and continue “until further notice.”
According to the park, recent rains have led to more abundant pine and oak nuts in parts of the Chisos Mountains, attracting bears to the area as they feed in preparation for their winter “denning” period. The central higher elevations of the park are already home to what the park calls a “healthy bear population.”
“During this period of heightened bear activity, we want to assure the safety of both park visitors and the bears,” Superintendent Cindy-Ott Jones said in a statement.
The temporary closure does not affect any other trails or areas of the park, though the park is advising visitors more broadly to “be bear aware”, and to secure all food in bear boxes available at campsites or inside vehicles.

CODY
Cody arrived at the shelter on 9/6/16 after a challenging, extended period of transition from his original home but he has already earned the Most Improved Pet award through his play group outings. Cody was pretty shut down towards both dogs and humans when he first arrived but he has been thriving in play group with other playful dogs of all sizes and temperaments, learning that loving humans provide good experiences, and growing more confident every day. Cody is less than a year old and is a heeler-retriever mix. Cody is neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated. He, and all the pets in the Alpine Shelter, is online at:
