CASA HOGAR ORPHANAGE
Across the street, in Ojinaga, Mexico, is the Casa Hogar Orphanage with 36-40 children.  Some have "special needs."  Some have been removed from abusive homes. Some have been removed from addict's homes.  Some have been living on the street in the cold. Subsequent mayors of Ojinaga have always fully supported the children, ages 2-17; paying for the electricity, their rides to school and back, and especially, their psychologist, until this one.
The present mayor doesn't understand the need for a therapist to give the children the tools to cope.
Would you help?  We need $1000 as soon as possible to secure a psychologist for the coming year.
Please send a check to:  Casa Hogar Orphanage, PO Box 296, Terlingua, Texas  79852.
We are a 501(c)3, so you will get a Thank You note with a receipt for your records if you make sure we get your info too. Please consider helping.  These kids need to learn how to hug, how to trust an adult, and how to sleep peacefully.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can call me at: 371-2226.  Thank you, Cynta

MARIJUANA USE LINKED TO INSANITY!
This is a direct quote from the 1936 film "Reefer Madness"...... "It's (marijuana) first effect is sudden, violent, uncontrollable laughter.  Then come the dangerous hallucinations - time slows down, almost stands still.  Fixed ideas come next, conjuring up monstrous extravagances - followed by emotional disturbances, the total inability to direct thoughts, the loss of all power to resist physical emotions ... ending often in incurable insanity."
To learn more, plan to attend the upcoming play, based upon the movie, REEFER MADNESS - written by Joe Landy, Playscripts, Inc.  Show dates are
Friday & Saturday evenings, Feb 26 & 27, March 4 & 5 at 8:00 PM with Sunday Matinees on Feb 28 and March 6 at 2 PM.  Opening Gala on Friday Feb 26!   This is a Last Minute Low Budget Production at the Cinnabar Theater.

RANGER is a big, calm, friendly Boxer/American Bulldog mix (plus a little Aussie and Chow, according to his DNA test.)  He likes his walks and chasing a ball, but he's also very content with human & dog company. He will be a great sidekick and likes a good scratch. Ranger is 3 years old, knows a few commands, and shows smarts that he will learn more.  He has lived most of his life outdoors and cannot wait to finally be part of a family, with owners who take him on walks, play fetch, and shower him with love and attention.  Ranger’s $100 adoption fee includes spay, shots, & microchip. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. Wildland Fire at Big Bend National Park
A wildland fire was ignited at approximately 4:45 PM on February 1st when heavy winds caused a power line to fall, igniting a fire near Panther Junction. The fire was burning in grassland and brush habitat.
Strong winds, up to forty miles per hour, pushed the fire to the east and northeast of Panther Junction during the evening of February 1st. Park and Terlingua Fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire, notified park visitors and staff, ensured visitor safety and protected park resources in the vicinity of the fire. Higher humidity, colder temperatures, and somewhat diminished winds help slow the fire during the evening hours, along with fire fighter efforts to work hot spots along the fire perimeter.
The fire was worked by up to 75 personnel. The fire burned an estimated 1792 acres, and was contained as of 6pm on February 6th. No park structures were damaged nor have any injuries occurred. Fire personnel have been released and are returning to their home units.
This fire is an example of how spring winds, dry conditions, and high fuel loads can quickly spread flame and promote burning. Visitors are asked to be careful with any heat sources, and especially open flames.
Visitors can find out more about the Powerline Fire at http://www.facebook.com/BigBendNPS, or on Twitter at https://twitter.com/BigBendNPS.
Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones said, “Thank you to all the responders for your hard work and quick response. We wish you a safe trip home.”

The National Park Service (NPS) this week released its Fiscal Year 2015 deferred maintenance statistics for national parks. The $11.9 billion nationwide total was up from the $11.49 billion report at the end of FY2014. Big Bend National Park is one of the parks with deferred maintenance, with a total of $91,051,080 in deferred maintenance projects. Deferred maintenance is necessary work on infrastructure, such as road and bridges, visitor centers, trails, and campgrounds that has been put off for more than a year. Aging facilities, increasing use of park facilities, and insufficient maintenance funding contribute to the growing backlog. Among Big Bend’s highest priorities for deferred maintenance include the headquarters building, water systems, and wastewater systems, each built during the 50th anniversary of the NPS. Additional projects include primary park roads, the Chisos Basin campground, and historic stone cottages.
Congressional funding for the National Park Service in 2016 includes an additional $90 million for nontransportation maintenance. Congress also passed a new highway bill which will provide a $28 million increase for transportation projects in parks this year. Funding for transportation-related maintenance and construction will continue to rise, by $8 million per year for five years, until it reaches $300 million per year in 2020.
Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones says, “We are inviting the world to discover the special places in the National Park System, like Big Bend National Park, during our centennial celebration. We need to have facilities that can accommodate guests and provide the best possible visitor experience. We hope to see additional resources for parks to improve visitor services, such as the Centennial bill that Congress is considering presently.”

Voting for the spring election will be held from 7 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, March 1.  Early voting in Terlingua will be at the Community Center from 11am to 3 pm on the 16th.

Agenda for the Brewster County Court for the meeting today at 9 am is posted at:
