Richard Rohr tells us, “Centering Prayer is simply sitting in silence, open to God's love and your love for God. This prayer is beyond thoughts, emotions, or sensations.” Registration and continental breakfast: 8:30 AM. Program: 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Soup and salad lunch included. Local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel discovered the body of a suspected marijuana backpacker at Big Bend Ranch State Park on Friday, according to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office. more here:

Not in Our Big Bend.  We really do have an opportunity to stop this. Yes, they're a powerful, wealthy force but they've not done nearly the homework they should have and they never thought they'd have to contend with a populous who has awakened from the "it can't happen here" trance. Not in Our Big Bend is trying to raise money  to help with attorney's costs and other expenses related to advocating for our land, our rights and our precious resources.

FANCY has a big personality packed into her small frame. This Australian Cattle Dog (heeler) is one year old, happy, healthy, and friendly to dogs and humans. She weighs about 30 pounds. FANCY loves giving kisses, play, and the attention from training sessions. She is all ready to move into her new home - either as a single pet or to join new canine friends. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm), located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. The new visitor center museum at Fort Davis National Historic Site will have its grand opening at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 30.
There will be a concert by the Alpine Community Band, living history presentations, mounted cavalry and Confederate re-enactment, a Victorian ladies’ style show, firing of an artillery piece and new displays in the 1876 post hospital.

Area school districts fare fine in accountability ratings
>>Alpine ISD met standard. Student achievement was 79; student progress was 36; closing performance gaps, 41; and post-secondary readiness, 79.

>> Marfa ISD is on improvement required as a district. Student achievement was 60; student progress was 32 (target was 15); closing performance gaps, 25 (target was 31); and post-secondary readiness was 71.

>> San Vicente ISD met standard. Student achievement was 89; student progress, 78; closing performance gaps, 46; post-secondary readiness, 50 (target was 12).

>> Terlingua CSD met standard. Student achievement was 65; student progress, 33; closing performance gaps, 34; and post-secondary readiness was not applicable.
