DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
The Annual Day of the Dead Celebration will be held in the Terlingua Cemetery on Sunday evening, November 2, 2014.  Everyone is invited to attend and participate in the lighting of candles on all of the graves in the historic cemetery.  Candles will be provided, but please bring your own lighters.  Pot luck dishes are much appreciated and musicians are especially welcomed to bring their instruments and play music around the campfire.
This year, a special altar will be dedicated to the Sanchez family that is traveling from Monterrey, Mexico to create a traditional altar in memory of their parents.  Jose Sanchez has participated in and consulted for many Dia de los Muertos Celebrations in Terlingua over the past years.  Their authentic altar is certain to be special indeed.
The other two altars are open to everyone to place mementos and representational items to remember and honor loved ones and family members that have passed away.   The Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and memories and a time to be thankful for the gift of living and the joys of fellowship, family, and love.
This year, the community is especially encouraged to remember Glen Felts and other local residents that have passed away recently.  Please bring mementos, pictures, and your memories to celebrate the lives of these great friends.
The lighting of the candles will begin at sundown on November 2 and the gathering will last as long as the night determines.   Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate.

HOSPITAL DISTRICT BOARD MEETING
It is important that citizens of Brewster and Presidio Counties are made aware that the Hospital District, created to provide funding for indigent care in our counties, will meet (I believe) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28 at the District office on Holland.  It is important that citizens realize that there are changes going on which are potential threats to our medical services and that they are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK NEWS RELEASE
WATERWAY CLEANUP OFFERS CHANCE
TO ENJOY & IMPROVE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park are sponsoring the fifth annual River Cleanup Day on Saturday, November 8.  We are seeking volunteers to remove litter while spending a day canoeing, rafting, or hiking along the Rio Grande.  These efforts improve local water quality, restore natural beauty, and reduce potential threats to human health and wildlife.  The River Cleanup is a great way for groups of people to get together, have fun, and help their environment.

Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park will supply the river permits, tools, and trash bags for the volunteers who sign up to help us pick-up trash, abandoned fishing lines, and old tires in our efforts to help preserve the beauty of one of our nation’s most scenic and threatened rivers.  The clean-up is a partnership of the two agencies but each area will be doing the trips slightly different.

For Big Bend National Park:  The Park will have one excursion that can accommodate 10 people.  The park will provide the canoes and arrange shuttles.  Please contact Jane Brown at (432) 477-1106 or email Jane_Brown@nps.gov for more information and to sign up for the trip.

For Big Bend Ranch State Park:  Bring your own canoes, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, or hiking shoes.  Let us know if you have a boat and how many people you can carry.  For those who do not have a boat or do not want to get on the river we will be doing a clean-up along the River Road, FM 170.  To volunteer and for more information call Amber Harrison or David Long at Barton Warnock Visitor Center at (432) 424-3327 or email Amber.Harrison@tpwd.texas.gov/ or David.Long@tpwd.texas.gov/ .

BEER LIST
A long-standing tradition at the Terlingua Trading Co. has come to an end.  “The Beer List” that allowed customers to buy a six-pack, leave it in the refrigerator, and drink it one beer at a time has been discontinued.   The decision came after the system was severely abused and became a huge problem for the staff.
The owner of the Trading Co. and the Terlingua Ghost Town, Bill Ivey, established the Beer List system over 25 years ago.   “The Beer List is unique to Terlingua and was simply begun to benefit our regular customers by providing a cold beer at a discounted price while enjoying the music, the fun, and the sunsets on the porch.  Visitors to the area find the tradition unique and feel honored to be able to participate in the process as well.”  Ivey laments the hard decision, but went on to explain how he is trying to devise a new system that will continue the tradition, but without hassle to the customers, or the employees of the Trading Co.  He went on to say that “hassle” just simply isn’t allowed on the porch.
Hopefully, there will be a revised Beer List soon after Chili Cook Off.  You will be able to read about it in the “Moon”.

SETTING THE HOUSE ON FIRE
SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY—Last Minute Low Budget Productions has announced its first show of the season.  On Thursday, November 16, Flambé by Zena Zeller will premiere at the Cinnabar Theater on Highway 118.  Zeller, an accomplished playwright, is a long-time resident of Big Bend.  This is the second of her works to be staged in South County.
There will be a gala opening night celebration, as usual.  Evening performances, starting at 8 p.m. will be held on Friday, November 17 and again November 23 and 24.  There will be 2 p.m. Saturday matinees on the 18th and 25th.  Tickets are $10.
In its two-plus decades of putting on plays, this non-profit community theater group has always done matinee performances of its shows, even though it was never possible to totally darken whatever venue it was using.  Not being able to keep out Ol’ Mister Sol took away some of the drama.  Now, with the completion of its very own building, that very important element of stage lighting—darkness—is closer to a possibility.  Bring on daytime theater!
Flambé, directed by Catfish Callaway, features a fairly large cast of eight, many of whom are new to the LMLB boards.  The comedy spies on the domestic doings of a divorced mother of two, her alcoholic ex, and her flamboyant neighbor.  There will be lurkings in the shrubbery.
Mark your calendars.
