TERLINGUA MOON - April 7, 2026 - Vol. 37, No. 14

TERLINGUA MOON
April 7, 2026
by Terlingua Thinking Team!!!

"Borderless love, the land of the free/Borderless love, how far can you see?
Borderless love, there's no border at all/In a borderless love, there's no need for a wall.

A wall is a mirror that can only reveal/One side of a story that passes for real
But break it all down/It all becomes clear/It's the fearless who love and the loveless who fear.

Over, under, around and through/Life is love and love is true
Over, under, around and through/Walls of thunder, skies of blue"

- The Flatlanders

NOWALL79852 UPDATE
History was made this past Saturday wherever you were, supporting our Big Bend community… No Wall, No Wire, Save the Rio Grande!  Viva Big Bend!  Our passion and dedication is amazing.

Don’t rest yet though, this week some critical things are happening including two public meetings about Barnard Construction’s activity on the Chispa Road upstream from Candelaria.   Please consider attending and/or emailing in a comment (see info below).

Tuesday April 7th:   Candelaria border wall meeting 6pm at the schoolhouse, landowners and other interested folks gathering to hear updates from County Commissioner, Big Bend Sentinel, NoBigBendWall coalition.  Please share, need to get the word out to upstream landowners and supporters.

Wednesday April 8th:  Presidio County commissioner court meeting at Marfa courthouse, 10am, agenda includes time for public comments (5 mins max per person) and then agenda items related to permitting for county road use and road modification by federal contractors.  Attend in person, via zoom, and/or email in comments.  Email:  deirdrehisler@co.presidio.tx.us

Thursday April 9th:  Jeff Davis County commissioner court meeting at Ft Davis courthouse, 10 a.m., agenda includes time for public comments (3 mins max per person) then discussion/action to, “approve a gift from Barnard Construction to reconstruct Chispa road from FM2017 to the Jeff Davis County and Presidio County line.”  Email:  countyjudge@jeffdaviscounty.texas.gov, jdcjclerk@jeffdaviscounty.texas.gov

Saturday April 11th:  As always, rally at the Y from 8 – 10 a.m. or whenever you’re moved to move on!  Bring signs or get some there.  No Wall, No Wire, Save the Rio Grande!

KEEP BIG BEND WILD!
Keep Big Bend Wild is a nonpartisan group, and we are talking with Republicans as well as Democrats on Capitol Hill.  Some of the former have taken note that we are closely aligned with Terrell County Sheriff Cleveland on the wall issue in the Big Bend region, as he and KBBW’s Chair, former park superintendent Krumenaker, testified before Congress in 2025 for opposite teams on a proposed border security bill that did not include any new barriers.  (If interested, you can read the testimony or watch the hearing video at https://www.congress.gov/event/119th-congress/house-event/117963)

We are pleased that Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) came to our area last week to see firsthand the geography and hear from some of you about what’s at stake.  We are also pleased that Congressman Lloyd Doggett of Austin organized a letter (https://tinyurl.com/4bcsc485) sent to new DHS Secretary Mullin on 3/27/26 signed by all Texas Democratic members of Congress staunchly opposing the wall, and expressing concern about the potential impact of detection technology as well.  We had a role in both, as did many of you.

We speak with Republican elected officials and their staff.  They are definitely listening.  We lament, as you do, their public silence.  But the fact that movement appears to be headed in the right direction suggests that our collective pressure is working, and that may be more significant than their public statements or lack thereof.  We need to keep that pressure on.

This fight is winnable, and together, we will beat back this wall.  And once we win, we need to continue to work together to keep Big Bend wild.

Our talking points and “what you can do” handout is posted on the KBBW website here (https://keepbigbendwild.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/KBBW-Wall-Handout-2026-Mar-4.pdf). Download it, share it, post it, whatever is useful!  Look for an updated version in the next few days.

Please learn more at keepbigbendwild.org, and consider supporting Keep Big Bend Wild.  There's no more important time.  Donations are welcome (we're financially sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation, a 501c3), but we need you to allow us to list you as a supporter even more.  Local business supporters are especially appreciated.  See who's already supporting KBBW at https://keepbigbendwild.org/our-supporters/, although we’re having trouble keeping up the fast-growing list up-to-date.  If you want to help further, reach out at info@keepbigbendwild.org.

COMMUNITY MARKET
Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library and portable free ‘porch’, even consult with Dr. Gigabyte if you have a computer problem.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

Big Bend National Park
It may be early April, but daytime temperatures in Big Bend National Park have already hit 100 degrees in the lower elevations.
If you're planning to hit the trails, keep these tips in mind:
1.  Start early - cooler temps = safer hikes
2.  If you're hiking in the lower elevations and along the river, plan to be off the trail by 11:00 am
3.  Bring plenty of water. Those 12 oz plastic bottles? Not enough. We recommend at least one gallon per person per day
4.  Use electrolytes in your water and eat salty snacks.
5.  Dress smart to protect yourself from the sun - wear light-colored clothing, sunscreen, and a hat

We've seen how quickly a simple hike can become an emergency when people aren't prepared. Don't take chances.

Your friends, your family, and your kids, want you to come home safe. So do we.

Prepare. Plan. Protect yourself. It's not just good advice - it could save a life.

JACKASS FLATS
Molly of Moondance has a foot injury and can't walk on it . So we had an exam tonight, and healing music frequencies, no findings of fracture or thorn,  so most likely a sprain ,,, trimmed long toenails, and applied a healing laser treatment (hence the glasses). We'll see what tomorrow  feels like.

Per the needs of our community, Dr. Burger of Jackass Flats  now has his license  to practice veterinary medicine here in Texas as well as Florida. We are in the process of drawings for a structure of a small clinic here. In the interim we will be setting up  a "Mash" unit at the Cactus Farm.  Stay tuned for updates.

REGARDING USE OF ALPINE DUMPSTERS
Are you committing a crime, and not knowing it's a crime??

Dumping trash in Alpine dumpsters is illegal for residents outside city limits (for example, those of us with physical residences south of Alpine). The dumpsters in Alpine are only for residents within city limits that are paying for trash collection services from the city's contracted company.

The fine for illegal dumping into these dumpsters is a minimum $500 up to $4,000; depending on amount illegally dumped.

We are still able to use the recycling center for FREE for various items like cardboard, etc.

The city previously offered "Sanitation Permits" that could be purchased for $60 per month that had expanded terms, but is phasing out the program because it was too hard to enforce the permits. Current permits will be valid until expiration, and not renewed.

For an official response or further details, you can contact the Environmental Services Coordinator, Adelina Beall, at 432-294-3183, or email: environmental.services@cityofalpine.com
