Flooding in Big Bend National Park
The Big Bend area of Texas has received significant amounts of rainfall during the past few days, causing flash floods, wet conditions, and flooding along the Rio Grande. On July 3, river flows exceeded 30,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) at Rio Grande Village and 18,000 cfs at Castolon, causing localized flooding in Big Bend National Park. Tornillo Creek and Terlingua Creek are full and are delivering large amounts of water to the Rio Grande. Smaller arroyos are flash flooding as well.
Floodwaters have reached low-lying areas in the Rio Grande Village campground, and campers have been evacuated and moved to campsites in the Chisos Basin campground. Campers with reservations at primitive roadside campsites have also been moved to the Chisos Basin campground, because unpaved roads are impassible.
Flash floods have caused minor damage and left debris and standing water on paved park roads. Due to wet conditions, mud, and potential washouts, unpaved roads have been temporarily closed until they can be assessed. Additionally, the paved road between Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon is underwater and has been temporarily closed. Motorists are advised to be alert for standing water and debris on all area roads.
At these river levels it is unsafe to cross the Rio Grande, and the Boquillas Port of Entry will be closed until floodwaters recede to a safe level.
The park is acting to protect historic structures, such as Alvino House in the Castolon area, from floodwaters. The Hot Springs Historic District is flooded and inaccessible.
More rain is forecast over the next few days. As the high water currently in Castolon moves downstream, it may impact Rio Grande Village on Friday, potentially causing another rise in river levels at that location.
Visitors are encouraged to check the park website for current conditions and alerts at https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/conditions.htm and to check with rangers at the Panther Junction Visitor Center.
Boquillas Crossing UPDATE!
Boquillas port of entry will be closed until JULY 11 due to high river levels.

Terlingua Community Market Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library and portable free ‘porch’.
Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, scented candles, self-defense key chains, handmade textile items, vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.
We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.
We'll be here all summer, in the shade. This year, we're celebrating the summer season by waiving the set up donation on the last Saturday of each of our summer months. It's a great way for a creator or new vendor to try out our market. We typically have a table and chair or two to loan to new vendors.
For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling license. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that). Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.
