HEALTH CARE COMING SOON TO SOUTH COUNTY : At the regular meeting of the Big Bend Regional Hospital District, which was held at the TFEMS building on January 23, the board voted unanimously to enter into a service agreement between BBRHD and Hamilton Health to establish a 5-day/week clinic in South County, to open in the spring of 2025.  Opening of the clinic will be contingent on the Commissioners' Court approval for funding of the building and location of the facility.

Sixteen citizens from the community were present at the meeting including four who spoke to the board expressing the urgent need for health care services.  Applause erupted from the citizens when the board voted to move forward toward a full-time clinic in Terlingua.  Many thanks to Reagan Reed who represents District 3, which includes South County, who was instrumental in making this happen.

Other discussions included a report from Linda Molinar, CEO of PCHS on the progress of their clinic in Terlingua.  They are currently providing services on Wednesdays at the TFEMS building.  Starting February 4, their services will temporarily be moving to the Red Pattillo Community Center and they will add another day, so services will be available on both Wednesdays and Thursdays.

BBRHD is also working to bring mobile mammogram services back to the Big Bend area.  Preliminary plans include having the unit spend a day in Terlingua, Presidio, and Alpine, with the possibility of adding more days as necessary.

Soon, we will go from living in a health desert to living in a fountain of health.

Animals, Art & Conservation: Wildlife Art Workshop at Alpine Public Library
This Sunday 2/9 The Wildlife Art Workshop will begin at 2:00pm in the multipurpose room of the Alpine Public Library.

This mini-workshop will offer hands-on demonstrations of drawing animals from Carol Fairlie, very well known in the region as a painter and art instructor at Sul Ross State University for many years.
2024 Big Bend National Park Artist in Residence Chris Ruggia will give a demonstration on characterization in drawing animals: how to add emotional energy in the body language and faces of the animals you draw. The session will end with a panel discussion on painting wildlife and how art interacts with wildlife conservation when Fairlie and Ruggia will be joined by painter and retired conservation biologist Patricia Harveson.

The workshop is open to all ages, though the drawing exercises will likely be most appropriate for adults and teens. Younger children may find them difficult.
Paper and pencils will be provided while they last, but feel free to bring your own as well!

Ruggia is partnering with the Big Bend Conservancy on a fundraiser release of a limited edition of prints of a painting created during his BBNP art residency. Enter to win the first numbered print in the edition! The winner will be announced at the Wildlife Art Workshop.

ENJOY OUR SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET : Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.  Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

We welcome new vendors.  Flea market items are also welcome.  After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green.  We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.  For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat.  Prepared food vendors must display a current food handling license.  (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control.  We look forward to seeing you there.
