“Ornithologists concluded that migratory birds take hundreds of naps as they fly; they also practice unilateral eye closure, in which one eye closes, thereby permitting half the brain to sleep.  Is this what happens when photographers close one eye to look through a viewfinder?  If so, they might be operating with only half a brain.  Perhaps that explains.” ‑‑ Bill Jay,  Photographer  (Could it be that the same concept applies to birders closing one eye to peer through their spotting scope at a migrating White-throated Sparrow?  And if so, could that explain some of their erratic behavior?  Just asking . . .   FreeBird)

FROM THE ALPINE FIRE DEPARTMENT ‑‑ Weather conditions in Alpine are putting our area at elevated risk for wildfires.  Be safe and be vigilant.  Alpine firefighters responded north of Alpine Sunday afternoon for a reported fast moving brush fire.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before it could reach any more high grass.

This is a reminder: the Brewster County burn ban IS in effect.  Be mindful of your surroundings and have a great start to May.

SOUTH COUNTY LIBRARY PROJECT – ROCKIN’ IT!  Over 120 survey responses... and counting, thanks y'all!  We love the online responses, but paper works too.  You can find and drop surveys at Shot Time and at the Post Office.  Remember, if you reply by May 15th you can win some awesome prizes-- Long Draw pizza, Lajitas zip line trip, and Cottonwood groceries can be yours if you tell us what you want to have at our library.  Dream big! :)
