TERLINGUA COMMUNITY GARDEN
It´s almost time for the Mesquite Bean Harvest and Terlingua Community Garden needs YOU to help gather clean, dry, ripe and good tasting beans for milling into flour. Later on this summer we will be driving a truckload of beans to Tuscon for milling and then for Green Scene '18, we will be featuring many different edibles made with mesquite bean flour for folks to taste and enjoy. This is a combined effort between the Terlingua, Alpine, Marfa and Presidio communities to raise funds for a traveling hammermill so that anyone can mill their own beans in their own community and take advantage of this local, yummy and FREE food resource.
Visit www.desertharvesters.org/harvesting-processing/ for information on picking the right beans. They are the best resource for learning all about harvesting and cooking with mesquite bean flour. Drop your harvested beans off at Terlingua Community Garden in the ghost town. We need a lot, like a vanload.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS
If you are in the area, I will be conducting a short night sky photography class through Big Bend Ranch State Park the evenings of Friday June 15th and Saturday June 16th. Probably a couple of hours. Same class both nights. The exact timing is still to be determined. But those should be firm dates. Please contact BBRSP soon for info. Or contact me. It’s a free class. #bigbend #bigbendranchstatepark #genesisworkshops #nightsky    Robert Miller

The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico, as well as the protected areas of Maderas del Carmen, Ocampo, and Cañon de Santa Elena, will change hours of operation beginning May 13, 2018.
Pedestrians will be able to access the port between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Friday through Monday. This is a change from the current days of operation, which are Wednesday through Sunday. This change in days reflects visitation patterns, which are reduced during the extreme heat of the summer.

Expanding Black Gap!
At its May 24 public meeting in Lubbock, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission will vote on a proposal to begin the process of purchasing a 16,000-acre tract of land in Brewster County from the Texas General Land Office. That 25-square-mile tract, which includes seven miles of frontage along the Rio Grande and holds habitat supporting bighorn sheep, black bear, Gambel's and scaled quail and other endemic Trans-Pecos wildlife, would be added to the adjacent Black Gap Wildlife Management Area.

This week, on Tuesday, we've got a special guest.  Tasha Thomas, a photographer visiting from North Carolina.  Come on by and let Tasha take your portrait!  It will cost you all of ten minutes!  From Tasha:    " I’m a portrait photographer visiting from North Carolina and I’m hoping to take some photos of folks who live in Terlingua as part of a personal project    and would only need about 10 minutes of your time.      I’ll be set up in the Ghost Town (home base: the coffeeshop) on Tuesday, May 1, roughly 9:30am-12 and 2pm-6. I hope some of you will stop by and sit for a portrait.
I’m happy to email your portrait to you in a few weeks (once I’m home and have gone through them all) if you ‘ll just remember to give me your email address after the photos are made.
I don’t have any plans for the photographs I’ll make just yet, other than to add them to my portfolio. You can see some of my portrait work on my website, if you’d like to get a feel for what I do."         Tasha Thomas        http://tashathomasphotography.com/people/

There will be activities to also celebrate the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  When the sun goes down, Grupo Los Kikos de Muzquiz will play for a public dance at the Valdez residence. Help us kick up some dust to celebrate 5 years of smooth operation of Boquillas Crossing. Message us about staying overnight.  Big Bend National Park is seeking input to update the 1995 Backcountry Management Plan. This document directs park management on wilderness and backcountry use topics, including backpacking, primitive car camping, backcountry use limits, and other considerations. Public meetings will be held at the Brewster County Multi-Purpose Facility in Study Butte on May
8, and at the Sul Ross State University Morgan Conference Center in Alpine on May 9. During these meetings, members of the public and stakeholders can learn more about the plan, ask questions of park staff, and make written suggestions and comments. Both meetings will begin at 6 pm and last one hour. The park encourages individuals, partners, and organizations to add their perspective and input to assist park management with their planning decisions.

Join us! Save the Night Program at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center
BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK
Barton Warnock Visitor Center, Lajitas, Texas   Saturday May 5, 2018    8:00 PM
Almost every living thing on our planet uses the cycle of light and dark to trigger life processes. Humans have come to depend on artificial light for nighttime activities. So, how does our artificial light at night effect plants and animals? Come to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center on May 5 th to find out. We will be hosting a presentation and star party presented by Cindy Luongo Cassidy and
John Cassidy of the Texas Section of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA Texas). Cindy is a founding member of the Hill Country Alliance Night Sky Team and the owner of Green Earth Lighting, which specializes in consultation services to reduce light pollution. John Cassidy is an amateur astronomer, secretary of the Austin Astronomical Society, and treasurer of the Texas Section of the International Dark-Sky Association.  Cindy will present an informative talk about the effects of artificial light on living things, including ourselves, and how we can reduce the negative effect of our lights followed by a star party led by John. The presentation starts at 8:00 pm and star party begins at 9:00 pm.
