On Saturday, September 30, Big Bend National Park will host a volunteer project in celebration of National Public Lands Day.  The National Park Service has also designated the day as a fee-free day, allowing all visitors to Big Bend National Park, or any national park, to enter for free. National Public Lands Day is a chance to join with hundreds of thousands of fellow volunteers at public land sites across the country to give back to the lands where we play, learn, exercise, and relax.  It is the country’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.   Free and open to the public, those wishing to volunteer will meet park staff in front of the Panther Junction Visitor Center at 8:30 am.  Volunteers will work on a project to remove interpretive sign posts along two trails – Panther Path and Lost Mine Trail.  The work along Lost Mine Trail requires hiking a moderately strenuous, 4.8 mile (roundtrip) trail.  Panther Path is an easier 1/3 mile path.  The park will provide volunteers with tools, work shirts, gloves and water.  Volunteers should wear work clothing and close-toed shoes, be prepared for outdoor conditions, and bring a refillable water bottle and snacks.  A pizza lunch will be provided at 12:00 noon.  For more information, please contact Anna Marini at anna_marini@nps.gov or 432-477-1108.

The Native Americans say "If you feel the wind from a birds wings you have been blessed". Wings Over Alpine is an up close and personal experience with Birds of Prey. See Hawks, Owls, Falcons, Vultures and Eagles in this presentation, which also includes a flying demonstration. Learn about how wildlife are the indicators of the health of the earth and what we can do, and not do, to help these magnificent birds thrive in the world that we share. This event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 7th and 8th, 2017 on the beautiful grounds at the Historic Kokernot Lodge Outdoor Amphitheater in Alpine, TX. We will have three demonstrations both days on Saturday and Sunday- 11am, 1pm & 3pm. It's FREE!!!

Shakespearian actor Johnny Stallings to perform Whitman’s Song of Myself
Marfa Live Arts hosts Johnny Stallings, founding member of the Portland Shakespeare Company and founding director of Open Hearts Open Minds, to perform Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself on the Autumnal Equinox (Friday, September 22) at the Presidio County Courthouse lawn in Marfa. On Saturday, September 23, Stallings will teach a community workshop focused on Whitman at the USO Marfa Visitor’s Center. Both events are free and open to the public.

Taizé is an ecumenical monastic community located in the town of Taizé in the Burgundy region of France. It was founded by Brother Roger Schutz when he purchased a small home there in 1940. Brother Roger’s home quickly became a sanctuary to countless war refugees seeking shelter. On November 11, 1942, the Gestapo occupied Brother Roger’s house while he was in Switzerland collecting funds to aid in his refuge ministry. Roger was not able to return to his home in Taizé until the autumn of 1944, when France was liberated. Over time, the Taizé community has focused on youth.  Today, over 100,000 young people make the pilgrimage each year to do community works and participate in the ecumenical services that have become the hallmark of what a Taizé service is. Although the community is Western European in origin, it has tried to include people and traditions worldwide. They have sought to demonstrate this in the music and prayers where songs are sung in many languages. The Taizé service is a worldwide reconciliation service that extends beyond doctrine, age, social economic status, and understanding to touch our hearts and open our minds. The service consists of meditation, music, song, sacred readings from many traditions, and chants in several languages.  Locally, our chants are led by Beverly Escuder, vocals, and accompanied by Carol Wallace on the piano. Our hope is that other musicians will join this celebration in the future. Traditionally, Taizé music includes accompaniment by guitars, woodwinds and violins. Because of Taizé’s longtime engagement by young people, we extend a special invitation to high school and Sul Ross University students. If transportation is an issue, contact Pam Cook at 432-386-5988 or pscook.herenow@gmail.com.   The entire community is invited to join us for this time of deep contemplation at 5:30 pm on Sunday, September 24, at St. James Episcopal Church located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. A simple soup supper will follow, free of charge.

Sebastian is a 1-year old, super happy and social little tanker of fun! In doggy playgroups at the shelter, Sebastian is playful with other dogs (let's wrestle!!!), but also responds to their cues extremely well (or not!!). He loves water and he’ll always stop what he’s doing if someone calls him over for a pet. For more information about any pet in the Alpine Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com
