“The notion of following your passion is worth indulging. Your passion is your source of power. To really live a full life, you need to follow where it leads . . . in defiance of all things conventional perhaps. And of course it has its price. You have to know that going in. But the price you pay, in my opinion, is not worth the time of day to think about. It is so important not to knee pad around the world. You should never bow down to anything but those you love and respect. Ever for anything.” Doug Peacock

Editor’s Note: Realizing it is Valentine’s week and considered, by some, to be solely a commercial endeavor . . . a few notes. Valentine’s Day was commemorated as far back as the Middle Ages although the first known written valentines weren’t sent until the 1400s. There are myriad stories about Valentine’s Day and its origin and history.com (search for Valentine’s Day) has some interesting information. All of that aside, let’s remember – in the words of Butch Hancock – to love everybody, every day, no exceptions.

Alpine Animal Shelter. Goose is a 1.5-year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He has that very distinct reverse-ridge of hair along his back. He is a lovely and sweet large dog of 55 pounds and is wonderful with both kids and cats. He has been a family pet for most of his life already, but had to be surrendered when the family moved into housing without any yard space for him. Goose loves to run and play with other dogs, and is very easy going with people too. He will become Pet of the Week on Thursday, with a reduced adoption fee. For more information about Goose, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com

SlimFest Two – Thanks to everyone who helped make what would have been Slim Richey’s 79th Birthday such a beautiful tribute festival. Most beautiful of all? The folks who didn’t know of Slim or his music before last year’s festival and who are now discovering it as well as the music of some of his favorite musicians and friends. A couple who stumbled upon Slim Fest oNe from Michigan came back this year. This year’s festival had folks from Vermont, New Mexico, Canada, Colorado, Minnesota and California. Not to mention right here in Terlingua, Ft. Davis, Marfa, Houston, San Antonio . . . From Open Mic to Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum; Wood & Wire; Bill Kirchen; The Jitterbug Vipers and more, it was a festival to be remembered. Thanks to The Starlight Theatre as well as our sponsors: Todd Sloan & The Westbank String Shop; Charles Thompson; Joe the Carpenter; Terlingua Rentals; Alex & Marti Whitmore; La Posada Milagro, Big Bend Resort & Adventures and Anonymous. Thanks to J.P. Schwarz for serving as emcee and to KRTS, KUT and KOOP for their great interviews and shows highlighting the event. Last but not least – to the amazing volunteers! Alex Bowling, Becca Evans, Cindy Burns, Crystal Allbright, Glenda Luttrell, Kt Misener, Shawn Turvey and Resa Callahan. Friday night sold out and only 10 tickets were left for Saturday so stay tuned for information regarding Slim Fest 3! Sunday’s Gospel Brunch Open Mic was magic as was Sunday evening’s performance by Doug Scharnberg & Kris Wade. And, for those who were there for the Vipers, you may have caught Slim himself on a melodic exchange with Francie, Masumi & Wilson. Far Out!!!  www.faroutbooking.com Viva Terlingua and Viva Slim.
