Itinerant Printer Chris Fritton
Menagerie Press in the Terlingua Ghost Town is hosting Itinerant Printer Chris Fritton. Chris will visit letterpress print shops across America throughout 2015, producing unique prints at each venue culled from their idiosyncratic collections of wood type, metal type, cuts, ornaments, and polymer plates. These prints will be mailed back to followers and supporters of the project as postcards from the road. SO…  Come join Menagerie Press for a presentation by Chris, printing demonstrations, and all-round open house. There will be beer, beans and bread on the patio. 4-8 pm, Tuesday, April 7. Operation Strong Safety
Even though the Big Bend sector accounts for only 3 percent of methamphetamine, 2 percent of marijuana, 1 percent of heroin and 0 percent of cocaine seized by law enforcement from January 2013 through May 2014, bills in Congress target the Border Patrol’s Big Bend sector with substantial additional security forces/facilities. Alpine Animal Shelter
Like many of the 30 dogs at the Alpine Animal Shelter (AAS), SYDNEY makes you wonder, “why is she still here?”  The answer is ONLY that the shelter gets very little traffic!.... SYDNEY is a smart, healthy, attentive and affectionate female heeler mix, ~45 lbs, 2 1/2 years old, short-haired and light colored (red spots on white). She has that heeler focus and stay-by-your-sidedness. She comes when called, walks well on a leash, is house trained, fetches a ball, adores human affection, and is friendly with kids, dogs of all ages, and cats.... She needs a hero to spring her free and would love that hero to give her an active life. Is it you? AAS is open M-F from 10am to 6pm, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. Come see SYDNEY or the other great dogs there! SYDNEY (and all the dogs at AAS) are on Petfinder at: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/31423869. For more info, email heatherthemule@gmail.com.

Big Bend Library Program
Don’t miss this program on Thursday, April 23 at 6 pm in the Big Bend Library. Paul and Voni Glaves have been avid motorcycle travelers since the 1970s.  They have ridden BMW motorcycles in all 50 states, all of the Canadian provinces and territories reachable by road, and in several foreign countries.  Fresh from retirement - she as a teacher, he as a Community Development Director - they were considering rejoining the workforce to become motorcycle tour guides. As a result they accompanied Ayres Adventures on three different motorcycle tours, for almost two months, in southern Africa. They rode in South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.  Always avid photographers, they took a few thousand photos while in Africa. They have distilled them down to one hundred or so to help them illustrate and explain the adventure.

Trial date set in Felts murder case
A trial date has been set in the case against a man accused of killing a well-known Terlingua bar owner. Justin Low, the defense lawyer for Tony Flint, said the trial date is scheduled for April 27 in Sierra Blanca. A request for venue change had previously been requested. Flint was originally charged Feb. 5, 2014, with first-degree murder in connection with the death of La Kiva bar owner Glenn Felts. Flint was released Feb. 25 on a $200,000 bond. Part of his bond includes not being allowed within 30 miles of the Texas-Mexico border—barring him from Terlingua completely—and would have to stay in Brewster County or adjacent counties.

Nine Illegals Apprehended in Brewster County
Nine undocumented Mexican Nationals were apprehended by the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office April 1. According to the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page, the Mexican Nationals were apprehended in the Black Gap area of Brewster County. According to the report, the U.S. Border Patrol lost sign of the group. But after wandering around in the desert for several hours, they were spotted by area residents who notified the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the scene and the group of nine were found. According to the post, it appeared that some of the males may be involved in gang activities.
Officials say large groups of illegal border crossers have been seen in the areas of Brewster, Presidio, Terrell and Culberson County. The case is still under investigation.
