In the year 787, The 2nd Council of Nicea assembled at the church of Hagia Sophia.  In England, in 1645, the Battle of Rowton Heath is a Parliamentarian victory over a Royalist arm commanded by King Charles.  In 1789 the office of Attorney General & Supreme Court was passed.  1869 Gold prices plummeted after Treasury sells large quantity of gold after a plot to control the market.  There's lots more - just Google....

Without water... NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. The majority of us don't have the option
to burden our local water corp. A truck-load of catchment tanks is forming right now; our
last load of the year. A full load means $0 freight costs. Wylie is the gold standard in quality
and the prices they give us for our continued patronage are the best in the market.
They are a Texas-based, family business since the '30s. Made In America!
We already have the heavy-duty Banjo valves on hand if you need them.

Marfa Live Arts and Starlight Entertainment will present All About Bette: An Interlude with Bette Davis, a play that celebrates the life and work of Bette Davis on Saturday, October 27 at the Crowley Theater.
Bette Davis’ entire life was a drama with comedic episodes. With nothing but raw talent and raw determination, she became the most famous woman in the world, taking on the Hollywood studio system, the FBI and the Catholic Church. In fact, she requested, “SHE DID IT THE HARD WAY” to be etched onto her tombstone.
All About Bette stars Morgana Shaw (Salem, Friday Night Lights, Walker Texas Ranger) who fully embodies and becomes Bette, sharing and revealing her tumultuous ride through the male dominated golden era of Hollywood. This multiple award-winning work was written by El Paso-based playwright Camilla Carr, and produced by seven-time Tony Award recipient, Michael A. Jenkins (An American in Paris, Matilda, The Color Purple and Kinky Boots.) For more information go to www.marfalivearts.org

Candy is an adorable, healthy Chihuahua/Boston Terrier Mix that is as sweet as can be. She is 6 years old, but age is only a number! Candy enjoys going for walks, loves to ride in the car and will be your best friend if you let her sit in the front seat! She is looking for someone that will be patient with her as she is fearful of most people until she gets to know them. Candy is house trained, spayed and fully vaccinated. She will make a non-Chihuahua lover turn into a Chihuahua lover! She is currently being fostered in South Brewster County but will travel to meet you. For more information on this black and white cutie, or any pet in the Alpine Shelter please email admin@alpinehumanesociety.org.

He's something special. Woofer is comfortable and respectful of kids, and brings a peaceful, laid-back energy to play group. The Harvest Moon
Often, the September full Moon is called the Harvest Moon instead of the Full Corn Moon. Unlike other full Moon names, which are specific to their respective months, the Harvest Moon is tied to an astronomical event: the autumnal equinox. The full Moon that falls nearest to the equinox (September 22) takes on the name “Harvest Moon,” rather than its traditional name. This means that a Harvest Moon may occur in either September or October. The Harvest Moon provides the most light at the time when it’s needed most—to complete the harvest!

THE TERLINGUA MOON
Vol. 29  No. 37   September 11, 2018  By MaeWestern

Save a boyfriend for a rainy day – and another, in case it doesn’t rain.” — Mae West

Congratulations from County Commissioner Hugh Garrett
Last month I asked if you were an “interested party” in two proposed 270’ communication towers in Study Butte and Terlingua. You overwhelmingly conveyed your concerns about the impact on dark skies to the Federal Communications Commission and Alta Towers, LCC. Alta Towers and their communications carriers listened to us! They have modified their plans so that we can continue to enjoy our dark skies and also look forward to improved communications service. We thank them for their consideration. No doubt this is a Win-Win for the community. Our thanks to Raymond Skiles, Amber Harrison, and Grady Blount Price.

DESERT LOTUS HEALING ARTS
MASSAGE AND ROLFING
Fall is in the air and it’s magical monsoon season. The Desert is hydrated and you should be too!
Did you know we use pure jojoba oil in all of our massage treatments? It’s like liquid gold for the skin. Jojoba oil actually comes from a seed, so unlike Terlingua, it is nut-free and safe for those with allergies. It also has a ph that matches that of the oil the human body produces naturally so it’s super hydrating and easily absorbed.
For the month of September we’d like to thank our local Park Service employees for all they do on our amazing state and national parks! Book a massage appointment and let us know you saw it in the moon for 10% off our already sweet local prices.

Local Family Needs All Our Help
Pollo Tercero from Lajitas,  a Terlingua high school graduate, and his family experienced an explosion in their home in Midland on August 9, 2018.   The Tercero-Cereceres family was rushed to the burn unit in Lubbock.  The oldest daughter passed away on August 11.  The youngest little girl is still in critical condition.  The parents are still in the burn unit a month later.  We need to support our neighbors.  Please help us!
A Fundraiser has been organized for September 8 at the Community Center behind the post office, from 11-4 pm.  That’s this coming Saturday.  There will be food (hamburgers), cake walk, raffles, And a bouncy house.
We need cakes, raffle tickets bought, people to eat hamburgers (or at least donate money for them). If you can’t make it, please donate at the jars placed around town, at the Cottonwood and Bee Mountain hardware, as well as other locations in the area.  Thank you for helping.

BREWSTER COUNTY BURN BAN LIFTED, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
Brewster County has decided to lift the burn ban in the Alpine District, effective immediately.
According to the Texas Government Code, the County Judge has the authority to lift the burn ban if a determination is made that drought conditions no longer exist. While much of the County has received rain, northern areas continued to remain dry until recently. Should moisture levels again decrease, Brewster County Commissioners Court has the authority to re-enact the burn ban at any time.

Big Bend National Park Posted Sunday AM
From fire to flood, Big Bend is a land of extremes this week! The wildland fire near Sotol Vista was contained just a day before 1-3 inches of rainfall last night in various parts of the park. Fittingly, our skies today are half blue and half grey, a perfect representation of the continuing forecast for 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow!
The Rio Grande flashed over 10,000 cfs and is currently still well over 1,000 cfs. Old Maverick Rd and Santa Elena Canyon Rd are closed due to flooding; Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive has some standing water and debris on the pavement, but is accessible.  The Hot Springs are completely under river water and inaccessible.  All unpaved, dirt roads will be very muddy and likely require 4X4. Please check at visitor centers for current updates as road conditions can change quickly.  Check for weather forecast and river levels here: https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/weather.htm
Big Bend National Park Exotic Plant Management Plan - The National Park Service (NPS) requests public comments on a plan to manage exotic, non-native plants in Big Bend National Park (Park). The 30-day review and comment period for the park’s Exotic Plant Management Plan and Environmental Assessment begins September 7, and continues through October 6, 2018. The National Park Service proposes to manage high-priority exotic plant species that have invaded the park and are causing substantial damage to natural and cultural resources and the visitor experience. The plan is available for review and download at the National Park Service Planning, Environment and Public Comment web site, http://parkplanning.nps.gov/bibe.
The NPS prefers comments be submitted in writing on the same site. However, comments may be submitted by email to: bibe_planning@nps.gov,
… by mail to:
Superintendent
PO Box 129
Big Bend National Park, TX 79834-0129
…or in writing at public meetings. The public, organizations, and others are invited to submit written comments throughout the 30-day
period, September 7 through October 6, 2018.
