DEAR FRIENDS OF THE TERLINGUA MUSIC BASH ‑‑ It’s that time again!  We are getting ready for the 2025 TMB in beautiful downtown Terlingua Ghost Town.  There will be more posted about the music in a bit but for now we are putting out the call to artists and other individuals who may be interested in donating an item or service to this year’s Silent Auction.  The Auction benefits the Mark (eYeBall) Kneeskern Memorial Art Scholarship and is awarded to a graduating senior of Big Bend High School whose primary focus of university/college study will be fine art.  This year’s recipient was Caitlin Staib, and she will be attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and up-cycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

We welcome new vendors.  Flea market items are also welcome.  After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green.  We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

 2025 SUMMER SOLSTICE MOON

You may not have noticed, but the exact date and time that the summer solstice occurs, changes year to year. In simple terms, it has to do with how the Gregorian calendar interacts with Earth's orbit relative to the seasonal cycle and its tilt. This year the solstice occurs on June 20th at 9:41 PM CDT. It shifts between June 20th, June 21st, and rarely June 22nd. In Boise, daylight on June 20th will be longer than June 21st by a single second. The next occurrence of a June 22nd solstice isn't until 2203.

For over two decades, this incredible local non-profit has been committed to improving life in the Big Bend, and we are proud to be one of their key initiatives!  THE BIG BEND AMATEUR RADIO CLUB (BBARC) will hold its annual field day June 28-29 at the Double Diamond pavilion, eight miles south of Alpine on Hwy 118. As in years past, BBARC will participate in national amateur radio exercises from 1 p.m. on Saturday to 1 p.m. on Sunday. This annual event is known as the American Radio Relay League (AARL) Field Day. It was first organized in 1933 by the National Association for Amateur Radio. BBARC has participated in these exercises since the beginning of the club’s formation 50 years ago. These exercises involve participants across North America who establish temporary ham radio stations in public locations or their homes to demonstrate their services and skills to the community. The use of these far reaching radio signals provides essential communication in the service of communities. These exercises highlight ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions and from almost any location, creating an independent and wireless communication network. BBARC Emergency Response Coordinator Bob Ward said, “Hams have a long history of serving our communities when storms or other disasters damage critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers. They function independently from the internet and phone systems, and a station can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.”

 Ward added, “Hams can quickly raise a wire antenna in a tree or on a mast, connect it to a radio and power source, and communicate effectively with others.” The BBARC will set up several radio stations at the Double Diamond pavilion, including one for voice communication, Morse code (CW), and digital operations.

 There will also be a “Get On The Air” (GOTA) station for adult and youth visitors who would like to make radio contacts under the direction of licensed operators. BBARC will also provide teaching and testing for prospective new hams, along with information on getting started and on-site testing at the Field Day site. The public of all ages is invited to attend the BBARC Field Day exercises on Saturday, June 28, between 1:30 p.m. and4 p.m. Visitors will witness hams in action, learn about their activities, and learn how to become ham radio operators.

 Interested parties should look for the Big Bend Amateur Radio banner alongside the road on South Highway 118 and check in at the information welcome desk. Visitors can tour the stations and operations on their own, and a map will be provided, or they can take a guided tour by a BBARC member.

Earth and Fire Gallery

Christine just moved here after coming for 10 years to her “home”.  She’s becoming a part of our local Art community.  She’s an abstract artist and she loves being married to another artist.  She has had her work displayed  at the Cow Dog in Alpine and the Venga Cafe in Terlingua.   Come meet her Saturday the 7th from 5 - 8 pm at our Earth and Fire Gallery!  She’ll be featured all of June.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. 

We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. 

We'll be here all summer, in the shade. This year, we're celebrating the summer season by waiving the set up donation on the last Saturday of each of our summer months. It's a great way for a creator or new vendor to try out our market. We typically have a table and chair or two to loan to new vendors.

The Alpine Avalanche just printed a Letter to the Editor from the (finally) new Postmaster at the Alpine Post Office.  His name is Oscar Davila and he seems to have extensive experience in small town and rural Postal service.  In his letter he invites people to visit him at the Post Office to share any ideas or concerns we might have.  Given the current turmoil (again) with our contracted delivery I think it is a good time to call or visit Mr. Davila, as he asked us to do in his letter to the editor.
