Locals Affected by The Border  Will the Border wall harm your lifestyle or finances?Politicians ignore protests against the border wall, but if everyday people take a simple online class to act as their own lawyers for free and file hundreds of individual lawsuits and injunctions from home, the massive legal pressure could grind the project to a halt. KEEP BIG BEND WILD!

CBP still has not restored the map on their Smart Wall website, further demonstrating that transparency is not their goal.  That said, CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott was reported to have told the Washington Examiner last week that “CBP will not build a border wall inside Big Bend National Park on the U.S.-Mexico border following blowback from local residents.” We are being heard – maybe.

But Scott also reportedly told the paper that “[I]n Big Bend National Park, CBP will pave roads along the border, as well as use more technology, such as drones, radars, cameras, and fiber-optic cables to monitor the area.”

The last version of the map they will no longer let us see shows a new road from Santa Elena Canyon to Rio Grande Village, between the existing River Road that BP agents regularly patrol, and the river.  Will this now be paved?? How many desert washes will need bridges or hardened crossings, at what impact and what cost?  And, of course, they also propose 17 miles of new vehicle barriers – and roads - in places where there is no threat of vehicles crossing the Rio.  And while many of us are fine with additional technology, provided it is no more intrusive than what’s already there, why does DHS need to connect everything with old-technology cables?  WHAT IS THE PROBLEM THEY ARE TRYING TO SOLVE, aside from feeling like they have to do SOMETHING?

While DHS has waived the 28 environmental, cultural resource, and public involvement laws upriver of Colorado Canyon in the state park, they have not yet done so downstream of that in our region.  In any communications anyone has with elected officials, we need to stress the need to keep that from happening!  DHS and its contractors cannot build any infrastructure in Big Bend National Park unless they either comply with those laws – which seems highly unlikely – or waive them.

Want to proudly show that you want to Keep Big Bend Wild?  We now have caps, t-shirts, and stickers available.  Shop at https://www.hubnotic.com/collections/keep-big-bend-wild. This is the only authorized Keep Big Bend Wild merchandise, and fully half the cost you pay is returned directly to Keep Big Bend Wild to support our efforts to protect this area from the wall and for the long term.

Please learn more at keepbigbendwild.org, and consider supporting Keep Big Bend Wild.  There's no more important time.  Donations are welcome (we're financially sponsored by the El Paso Community Foundation, a 501c3), but we need you to allow us to list you as a supporter even more.  Local business supporters are especially appreciated.

Re: Voices From Both Sides/Voces De Ambos Lados

I'd like to take a moment and provide some clarification in the hope of helping

everyone who plans to attend understand why we (the VFBS board) posted what we did

the other day. Almost everyone in our beloved community is engaged in this border

wall/barrier discussion and/or the fight against it, it's important to remember that while

the future of Voices would no doubt be forever altered or even possibly ended by the

building of a wall, it hasn't yet and we hope to see this reunion of families and friends

continue for as long as it can. There are many things at stake, and on the peripheral

many more watchful eyes than ever before. In spite of all of it, we're all doing everything

we can to work together with all parties involved to pull it off, and with a few

concessions, whether we or any of you totally agree with them or not, we WILL be able

to gather at the Rio as we've done so many times now.

Keep in mind that the location itself - Paso Lajitas - is as important to Voices as

almost any other factor, and because it's private property Voices has been allowed to

happen each year by permission from the landowner. Love them or not, they have

always, so far, granted permission. Should they ever change their mind, it would

jeopardize the future of this beautiful celebration. And this celebration is bigger than any

of us, important to all of us. More important to the abuelos who have the opportunity to

walk across the Río once a year to hug their nietos, for the families separated by the

imaginary line. The music, the food and fun, the t-shirts, they're all a great part, but as

the people on the Texas side, the most important thing we can provide is our peaceful

presence so that this reunion can be possible. This is an opportunity for celebration of

the life along the frontera that we love rather than an opportunity for demonstration of

the things we know that threaten it. For one day, we ask each and every one of you to

consider all that is at stake, and for one day - a beautiful moment in time - step aside

from anger we're understandably feeling, and come together at the Rio with love in our

hearts and together make a light that shines so bright it speaks for itself.

We have not made rules nor do we have the authority to tell anyone what not to

do. However, there will be people there that have and do, and should you decide that it's

more important for you to protest in that way than it is to celebrate the love of our

collective community, the blame might possibly fall squarely on you, Voices as we

know it could cease to exist. I don't think a single one of us on either side want to see

that come to pass.

If you are still concerned or have questions, please send me a direct message

and let's have a quick chat on the phone. I'd be happy to speak to you.
