Stocking stuffers. A woman at ArtWalk came into Front Street Books with her family, including twins, and bought Carlton Leatherwood’s Big Bend People, Volume 2. “The people stories are the right length for bedtime reading to my children,” she said. So there you go. The book has photography by Voni Glaves, editing by Nancy Faubion, and a cover by Anna Oakley. It includes more than interesting Terlingua people—the desert landscapes of Maria Blosser and a WordOff poem by Adrienne Evans. It may be purchased at Terlingua Trading Co., High Sierra, La kiva, Ring Huggin’s Many Stones, and Barton Warnock Visitor Center.

The holiday season is upon us - don't forget the Terlingua Trading Company is open every day from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. From blankets and books to jewelry and clothing, we have a world of amazing gifts. We also have seasonal cards as well as every day cards from artists such as James Evans and Crystal Allbright. Come visit us and then enjoy the Chisos from The Porch for a spell!

Many residents and visitors to the Big Bend remember the late, great Slim Richey. Slim & his wife Francie were long time/ part time residents of Terlingua and Slim left us all too soon in 2015. February 9 - 12th we'll be celebrating the life of Slim once again via Slim Fest tWo at The Starlight Theatre. Among the many musicians headlining the festival are Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum, Wood & Wire, Greezy Wheels, Katie Shore, The Jitterbug Vipers and more.

Dodge is a 3.5 year old gorgeous male german shepherd/pit bull mix who came into the shelter on 9/9/16. He comes when called (to his given name of “Dog”) and really loves human affection. Dodge was surrendered and likely was an only dog who lived in a yard. Dodge is friendly with all people and with some other dogs, but we recommend that he be an only dog - we think he’d prefer it and he has shown some selective behavior. Dodge walks well on a leash, appears housebroken, and longs for a permanent human connection.  He is a medium energy dog and weighs about 70 pounds. For more information about Dodge, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com

Presidio and Ojinaga will be having a "March of Solidarity" on Saturday, November 19, 2016. This is NOT a protest in the sense that we want to show unity and peace without violence or hate!  Here is some information:
The purpose of this event is to show the world we stand together and we are stronger together. We are a community of peace. We are marching to show unification and solidarity. It must not be negative. It is about bringing our race together, the human race.
We live in harmony with each other, relying upon each other in good times and tough times. The river brings us together and never will divide us in our spirit, faith or cohesiveness. The people of Mexico (Ojinaga) must know that we are with them, support them, no matter what happens or who is in office.
We will need the participation from every person in Presidio and the surrounding area. This is imperative as we must make a statement in numbers.
Ojinaga must also come out in full strength and in good will. Peace is the key.
John Ferguson and I will be going to Ojinaga on Wednesday morning to speak with the city officials and the people of Ojinaga about the march on Saturday. They have an open community meeting starting at 9 am. We must have them keep a positive spin on all of this.
The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19th. We will meet at the church (tentative) parking lot and march from there. I am thinking we should all wear white shirts with a safety pin.  10 AM
Safety pins to show solidarity. We will march/walk hand in hand and meet our brothers and sisters from Mexico on the International Bridge, holding hands as a bridge of friendship and unity as one.
Banners, posters are all encouraged, but no political, negative images or words.
Our hash tags will be: #strongertogether #masfuertesjuntos #vivalafrontera

Successful Search and Rescue - “Overdue hiker Calvin Parker, 59, of New Orleans, Louisiana, was successfully located by National Park Service, Border Patrol, and Customs and Border Protection resources. While backpacking on the Mesa de Anguila, the hiker separated from his hiking companion, and failed to return to the base camp before nightfall on November 6th. The park received word of the overdue party, and initiated a search and rescue. With desert temperatures in excess of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, National Park Service ground searchers were deployed to trails in the area, and the park’s fixed wing aircraft and Customs and Border Protection helicopters aided by Border Patrol assisted with the search.
Around 1200 on November 7th, the hiker was found and united with his hiking companion. He was found to be mildly dehydrated, and was flown with his hiking companion to the Lajitas airport where rangers were able shuttle the hikers back to their vehicle. Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones says, “We are relieved that Mr. Parker was found by the search team, and was able to make it back in good condition.
We encourage all of our hikers to be well prepared when hiking on remote trails like the Mesa de Anguila.” The park recommends letting a trusted friend or relative know your itinerary, and have them contact us if a group is overdue. Additionally, a reminder that backcountry permits are required for all backpacking trips.”

The Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District will be having a
Regular Board Meeting on November 17th at 9 a.m. In conjunction with this meeting we will be having a special presentation on local aquifers.

VOTING
Tomorrow - Tuesday, November 8 is Election Day. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Registered voters in the Terlingua area can vote at the following locations:
Precinct 5: Panther Junction Community Room - Big Bend National Park
Precinct 6 & 7: Red Pattillo Community Center (behind the Post Office in Terlingua)

There is some confusion over the Voter ID laws in Texas so hopefully this will speed things up for folks tomorrow.

The easiest way to get through the line is to have your voter registration card and a photo ID. The IDs accepted are Texas Driver License, Texas Election Identification Certificate, Texas Personal Identification Card, Texas License to Carry a Handgun, US Military Identification Card, United States Citizenship Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization, or a United States Passport or Passport Card. These must not be more than 4 years expired.

If you do not have one of the above, you will still be allowed to vote with your voter registration certificate, certified birth certificate, current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document with your name and address. If you don't have a photo ID and are going to vote using one of the above for ID purposes, you will be asked to execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration.

Remember though - you must have been registered to vote in either Precinct 6 or Precinct 7 by October 12 to vote in the general election at the community center on Tuesday or in Precinct 5 to vote at BBNP Panther Junction Community Room.

“If you are bored and disgusted by politics . . . by all means stay home on Election Day if you want, but don't [fool] yourself that you're not voting. In reality, there is no such thing as not voting: you either vote by voting, or you vote by staying home and tacitly doubling the value of some Diehard's vote.”  David Foster Wallace

Alpine Animal Shelter: Karter is a young, happy little cow dog mix who is very engaged with people. She mills around wonderfully in the play yard with other dogs, though like any good working dog she keeps her eye on the humans all the while. Her temperament suggests she's the stick-around type. She loads up nicely in cars, and puts her smiling head out the window the whole time. A lucky adopter can take Karter home for $100, which includes her spay, her microchip, and all current vaccinations. For more information about Karter, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

The final shooting for the Terlingua Project will be taking place on Saturday, November 12th and Sunday, November 13th, 2016. To participate and receive a free fine art print of your portrait, you will need to sign a consent form prior to the shoot. Go to Posada Milagro at 2 p.m. either Saturday or Sunday to sign your consent.  A videographer will be documenting our project and would love to include some of you in the process. If you prefer not to be included in the video you can opt out by not signing the video consent form. Once you have signed the consent(s), you will find us in front of the old Perry School House (not the Perry Mansion).  We can’t start shooting until the front of the school house is in shadow and at this point we’re not exactly sure when that will happen…our best guess is sometime around 2PM.  Once the images are processed, your 10” X 15” image, centered on a 13” X 19” fine art archival sheet, will be sent to you via mailing tube. There is no charge to participate and the print is our gift to you for participating. But even more importantly, you are receiving a moment of your history and we recommend you protect and preserve the image for generations to follow. Look forward to seeing you there. Terry Cockerham

For those of you who haven’t heard about us previously, our mission is to record for history a moment in time in Terlingua. Big Bend Library is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair this week to raise money for the library. Pre-K - 3rd grade students have each chosen a book for the school wish list. We’re asking members of the community to stop by and fulfill a student’s book wish. All of the books selected are under $10. It’s also a great opportunity to Christmas shop for all the young ones on your list. All money raised through the Book Fair goes directly to the library. This is a good way for the community to help offset the money lost by the county’s decision to cut our library funding. Big Bend Library is open from 8-4 Monday-Friday.

Best Bowl of Red:

Meet MayaMaya is magnificent. She is a 3-year old black lab mix with who was picked up as a stray in Alpine on 9/22/16 and though she seems like she must have been an owned pet, no one came to pick her up. Maya has an amazing disposition and is very well-behaved. She prefers people to other dogs, though she socializes just fine with them in playgroup. She has a gorgeous coat, super-silky ears and is housebroken. When we’ve walked her through the cat areas she shows mild interest and thorough respect. This pretty-much-perfect dog will bring much joy to her new home. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on all shots. She can be adopted for only $50 until November 12th. For more information about Maya, or any pet at the Alpine Animal Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

The Brewster County Courthouse will be closed on Friday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.
