Pippin

You can’t keep a good dog down! Life has thrown 2-year old Pippin some serious curveballs but his spirit has prevailed. Pippin was living on the street when he showed up in the yard of a dog-lover, who brought him to the shelter. It was a move that saved his life, as Pippin was just beginning to suffer from Parvo. Even heading into illness, his good-natured and playful self shone through and a whole team of folks have restored Pippin to perfect health. Pippin is now ready for an easier time of things! He gets along great with other dogs, comes when called, walks well on a leash, gently hops into your lap and has an “up for anything & everything” vibe. He is a purebred mutt. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com

News from our Precinct 2 Commissioner, Hugh Garrett:
If you were unable to attend the Commissioners Court Meeting in Study Butte on March 29th, I hope you have had an opportunity to talk with your neighbors about some of the items addressed. We learned  the Rio Grande Electric Co-op is committed to building a substation in Study Butte and has already contracted with LCRA to plan and construct a new transmission line that will effectively provide reliable electricity for South County. Unfortunately, we also learned that the timeline is five years for approval and construction of the project. The BBCA approached the County regarding taking over the Canyon View Ballparks as a county park and this is under review. And we talked about future clean-up and electronics recycling days and I will keep you updated on these opportunities.
One item not on the agenda that has been brought to my attention by several constituents concerns the sale of property in South County. Any sale of property in Brewster County must be in compliance with the Subdivision Regulations of Brewster County, Texas and the EDAP Model Subdivision Rules. The bottom line is that if you’re dividing your property into two or more tracts less than 10 acres, you must comply with the Regulations and get a plat approved by Commissions Court. If the property is for residential purposes, then the EDAP Rules must be followed. Any tract less than 5 acres is assumed to be for residential purposes. Your surveyor is aware of the requirements. Additionally, former Brewster County Judge Val Beard developed a response to FAQ regarding subdivisions that you can finds on the Brewster County website at www.brewstercountytx.com. Click on “Permits, Procedures, Policies” at the top of the page, then go to “Subdivision Regulations” and click on the link for FAQ.
Congratulations to TFEMS for another successful Firemen’s Ball and finishing the night with Radio La Chusma at the Starlight was way cool. My contact information is on the Brewster County website. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to serve.

What a gorgeous looking German Shepherd mix Lobo is!  Still only a year old, Lobo is nearly full-grown but will probably get a little heavier than his current 80-ish pounds. He is still a puppy- albeit a giant puppy.  He seems really excited about playing with toys but behaves like he doesn't have much experience with them. He walks pretty well on a leash and shows readiness to learn 'sit' and 'come here.'  He's a curious guy, but Lobo hasn’t yet had much human guidance. He needs his keeper to set and enforce the rules, and to teach him how great it feels to be told that he's a “good dog.” With a savvy owner, Lobo will keep turning heads! Lobo is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com

. . . a project reminiscent of Richard Avedon’s project “In the American West” (Here’s the link to find out more about Richard Avedon: wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Avedon).Avedon’s project took about 5 years to complete and was funded by Mr. Amon Carter (as in the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth). This project is limited to one or two days and that number is dependent on the weather. More importantly, it is self-funded.
Weather permitting, we will set up somewhere in the Ghost Town. We are open to suggestions as to specific settings where we could set up our equipment. The subjects must be photographed in shade, and we will be shooting in the late afternoon with specific times provided at a later date. Check the “Our Terlingua” Facebook page for details. If the wind isn’t blowing, we will have a white backdrop as part of the set up. This shoot will take place late in the afternoon of May 7th and/or 8th. We will take 4 to 5 imagesof each individual. The primary goal of this project is to produce a body of work about individuals who live and work in Terlingua and to share that imagery with those that have not experienced this unique environment. This  project is NOT designed to exploit the residents of Terlingua in any way.  I have two goals. First, I would like to create a collection that may be displayed in a gallery, art center or museum. Second, a fine art photo book about the Big Bend area is also a possibility. It is likely I will return to continue the project for historical purposes in November. I am generally in the area twice a year shooting landscapes.
We won’t give any direction as to how we want you to look. Wear the clothes you would normally wear and pose in any manner you choose. If you want to jump up in the air, feel free to do so. If you want your back to the camera, you can do that. If you play a guitar, strum all you like. For your participation, you will receive a 10” X 15” black and white print centered on a 13” X 19” sheet of archival fine art paper. Elsa is an Australian Cattle Dog mix who is quite a listener - she looks to humans for direction, and is ready to bond by having adventures together.  Elsa is a 30 to 35-lb youngish dog, with perky, mismatched ears (they may be on their way to standing up!). An intelligent breed, she'll do best in a home that interacts with her and gives her exercise (normal-dog daily heaven of a walk/run/hike/bike with her person and possibly some other dog pals.) She's alert and ready for fun, but also deeply satisfied sitting close and getting a chest or ear rub. Elsa is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. Marfa Live Arts Brings Mexican-American Story
to the Crowley Stage on Tuesday
Marfa Live Arts’ 2016 playwright-in-residence Raul Garza presents his play Confessions of a
Mexpatriate on Tuesday, April 19, at the Crowley Theater at 7.30pm (doors at 7pm.) Actor and comedian Mical Trejo will perform the show with musician Davíd Garza playing live score.
Confessions of a Mexpatriate follows the journey of amuel, a modern-day, media-minded Mexican-American who travels to Mexico to try to unplug from his American side and connect with his roots in the land of his ancestors. His account of what happens is both funny and fearful—and may say as much about the land he left behind as the one he has entered. This will be Mical Trejo’s seventh time on stage bringing Garza’s character Samuel to life with past
performances in the US and Mexico in Austin, Chicago, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and San Miguel. Trejo is active in the theater scene in Austin with St. Edwards University, Latino Comedy Project, and Hyde Park Theatre.
Playwright Garza, a National Latino Playwriting Awardee, found his inspiration for the play during a four-week writing residency in Oaxaca, Mexico. He says, “When a lot of Mexican Americans go to Mexico, I think they see the layers separate. Here in the U.S., it’s like you’re this mezcla of both culturas. When you go down there you can really separate this and say, ‘This is the American side of your brain; this is the Mexican side.’ You see where they conflict and where they complement.”
During his time in Marfa Raul will also teach Marfa Live Arts 6th Annual Playwriting Workshop with Marfa High School students April 18-22. His work with Marfa Live Arts in collaboration with Marfa Independent School District is the primary reason Garza will be in Marfa. He will work one-on-one with students in their English classes helping them write their own plays. He says of his upcoming work with the youth in Marfa, “I’m looking forward to experiencing the empowerment that comes with telling your unique story in your own voice. I can’t wait to see the students discover this for themselves.” Plays written by Marfa students during the Playwriting Workshop
will be performed by area actors and staged at the Crowley Theater on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.
On April 18, 2016 at 6:30pm, tune into Marfa Public Radio for a West Texas Talk interview with playwright Raul Garza, actor Mical Trejo, and musician Davíd Garza. Next month, listen for a live interview with Marfa High School student playwrights on May 2, 2016 at 6:30pm.
Confessions of A Mexpatriate will be free and open to the community.

Kyle Petty's Victory Junction Charity Ride will be in the Big Bend on May 2nd and 3rd. 200 riders expected. They are staying at Lajitas. Route from Lajitas to San Antonio as they leave on the 4th is unknown. I'm sure we'll all provide them with our Big Bend hospitality to ensure the ride is successful. STUDY BUTTE SUBSTATION?
“Larry Powell, director of engineering for Rio Grande Electric Cooperative of Brackettville, told the semi-annual South County meeting of the commissioners that all power now
comes from a single line from Persimmon Gap on U.S. Highway 385 in Big Bend National Park, extending to Lajitas. By putting a substation in South County, the co-op could increase
capacity of the system for future expansion and provide more reliable electric service by putting the station closer to its customers. Powell said that the co-op is looking at land at the corner of Bee Road and Terlingua Spring Road. The substation could boost the power on the far end of
the 163-mile power line”  according to this article.

Goodbye sweet Marie.
"In marriage, Marie found happiness winning the heart of Texas singer/songwriter/actor/folklorist Allen Wayne Damron. When she was not busy being a writer and Allen's business
manager, she worked in a local "ghosttown" resort as the hotel operator, concierge, and town air traffic controller. Marie was the one to call at any time of the day or night when stray cows wandered onto the runway, preventing planes from taking off or landing. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/newsobserver/obituary.aspx?page=lifestorypid=178626403#sthash.jR8F5mYW.dpuf

THE PLAY THAT IS LIFE - Hey folks, Chris Lee here!
Wanted to first thank everyone who supports communityvtheatre, whether it is participating in, helping build, continually funding, or coming to the shows and enjoying an evening or two. Our last one, Reefer Madness, seems like it was a hit - thanks to you! As an actor in that play, I learned something that truly touched my heart this time around and wanted to share. This Community theatre has brought a lot of joy and laughs to us, and I for one hope to keep it alive as those who have before us (and still are). I realize that the only way to keep it alive is to start
infusing new blood in every area of it. So we are setting the stage and putting the intention out there to anyone who wishes to step on board with some of the old who can help and teach the new. And KEEP community theatre alive in Terlingua and South Brewster county!
You can contact me at gypsthreethousand@gmail.com. or find one of the theatre folks. Thanks and may we all continue to create and be blessed in the play that is life.

Bambie is a sweetheart who prefers the company of humans to other dogs. She may happily cohabitate with another calm pup, but her joy in life is her human. Bambie is identified as a heeler mix and that is absolutely a heeler quality. Her personality also reveals great intelligence and a capability to be independent. Bambie is 3 years old and weighs 55 pounds. She requires only moderate activity but a lot of human love and affection. Bambie is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road.
