My name
is Diane Paul, and I live on the Terlingua Ranch as a property owner
for 8 yr. I work out of town, although, I get back and forth each week. I
am conducting a survey, along with some other health care professionals,
for South Brewster County about health care needs in our area, or lack
of. It is a 4 question survey, short and precise, about some of the most
important needs we have regarding available health care. I would like to post an announcement
in the Moon of 2 dates, and times, that I will be at the Cottonwood
Store in Study Butte to personally conduct this survey, as it will end
Jan. 15. I also have placed the survey at 4 local establishments in a
large brown envelope for our communities to get involved. Those places
are; 1. Needful Things Country Store, 2. The American Legion off Hwy
118, 3. General Store at Lajitas, and 4. Terlingua Ranch Office. The
dates I will be at the Cottonwood Store, will be, Jan. 6, on Tues. from
2-6pm, and Jan. 10, from 11am-3pm. My ph. # is 979-218-3769. If you have
any other suggestions in promoting this survey, please let me know.
The
recycling trailer has been emptied and is now accepting more. Thanks
to Todd, Barb, and Liam Bureau, Sue and Dan Carlson, John Calomeni, Sue
and Joe Rife, and the National Park for their help. PLEASE.... no hard
plastic, no batteries of any kind, no plastic sacks, Styrofoam, oil
containers (not even vegetable ones), or spray cans. We had to return
with two large sacks of TRASH.....trash is not recycling. However,
thanks to the rest of you who make our volunteer job easier

calendars featuring the work of local artists are nearly sold out!
There are some calendars left at two venues in town: High Sierra Bar and
Grill and the gift shop in the lobby of Forever Resorts (motor inn).
These calendars make great gifts, and are a wonderful tribute to our
fellow artist Mark Kneeskern, whose life was celebrated this past
weekend by friends and family from near and far. Many thanks go out to
the artists who donated images, and especially to Lauren Stedman for her
design, Ruth Jansyn for her support, and Mindy Hamlett for handling
distribution. Thanks also to George Womack for images of his collection
of Mark's work. Any profit on the sales will be used for promoting local
artists and their work.
The High Sierra will
be open all week, business as usual hours to ensure all visitors and
local residents can get the same great food, drink and other
accommodations as always. We will serve as "Sports Central" through
Sunday with music on Monday, December 29 with Rocky Top Alien Experiment
and on Tuesday, December 30th - Ted Arbogast.

time local Charles Gaushell passed away on Wednesday, December 17th.
Charles was a graduate of LSU, a police detective in Los Angeles during
the 1960's and Chief of Police in Monroe Louisiana. Locally, he drove
shuttles at Far Flung and worked as a jeep tour guide for Ten Bits
Ranch. Most people will remember him for always standing next to the
vulture statue at the end of the bar at La Kiva during happy hour. He
was one of the greatest storytellers this community has ever seen. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Anne.

On
Tuesday, December 16, The Barton Warnock Center had a truly spectacular
Christmas program thanks to the efforts of this wonderful community.
Due to being short-staffed and not having our usual contingent of
volunteers we felt that we would not be able to have the program at all.
However, Resa Callahan and Glenda Luttrell stepped up and volunteered
to coordinate everything. They worked with the other choir members and
Terlingua CSD staff to put together the program, lined up a Santa Claus,
got donations from the community, put a team of cookie bakers together,
bought all the refreshments, and got flyers printed and posted. They
had lots of help from many people who gave their time and enthusiasm to
“saving Christmas”, and we owe you all a big Thank You!
Special
thanks go to the Cottonwood Store, Harper Hardware in Presidio, Lajitas
Resort, Big Bend Resort and Adventures, Chili Pepper Café, and
Quicksilver Bank for all their contributions! We had a record turnout of
over 150 people. The Community Choir and the Terlingua School
Roadrunner Band put on wonderful performances (thank you Ted!), and
there were memorable and beautiful songs, dances, and readings from many
students and community members. And, GREAT NEWS! Resa and Glenda have
agreed to do it again next year! Thank you all, and Merry Christmas
indeed!

"Terlingua, I sent the art piece that I will donate to Shannon to do whatever she wishes with. It is 2 larger piece of sandstone rock (1 a base and the other will be mounted into it). The theme is S.P.A.C.E. Well I have made my Mark and I am leaving S.P.A.C.E for you all to leave your MARK. I sent a dremel tool, bits, and chisels down, feel free to bring your own tools also. Be looking for its arrival in the secret garden at the starlight. it is a free for all art project, carve it, draw it, just get down there and let the artist in you rock on... if you have questions, ask Brian, Buckner, or myself. The only thing I ask is to be gentle with the hammering on it (use finesse and patience), for it is sandstone, not limestone, it is a softer rock."

The Space Art Show dedicated to the memory of Mark "Eyeball" Knesskern will be taking place at the Starlight on Saturday night December 20th. If you would like to add your own work to the show you may drop off your art at the Starlight from 1 - 4 pm Wed, Oct 17th and 10 - noon Thur, Oct 18th.
All the proceeds from the sale of Eyeballs art will fund a week long art camp for winners of the Terlingua school art contest to be held Wed, Jan 28th in the school library at 6pm.

ORGANIZING WRITERS OR WRITING ORGANIZERS WANTED
This is my last piece as a co-organizer of the Word-Off, and it will not be spoken at the mic.
For twenty years, off and on, I have had the privilege of working with Tom Gaffaney, Betty Moore, Sam Richardson, and others who have given their time and talent to organizing and producing the annual Word-Off event in Terlingua. Each year we are not sure it will happen or how. It does. The local venues give us space and time to do it, the community comes out to support it, and the writers? Well, some are excited, some are anxious, and some just can't help themselves. (Some don't even show up, but I believe they are "doing" the Word-Off in their own way if they don't.)
To get to the point, Tom, Betty and I are _____. (Choose from one or more of the options below):
1. Turning it over to someone (or two, or three) who would like to try their hands at bringing fresh energy and a new approach to the event.
2. Letting it go. Letting the memories live their own lives while other events create their own.
3. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to do something long and worth-while, but ready to say fair thee well to the event, which like an old friend who visits once a year has brought us together so many times.
Please consider whether or not it may be your turn. Talk to us if you want our opinions about what the spirit of the Word-Off has been, and what we've hoped it would be. Or blaze your own metaphorical trail. And thanks for having given me the chance to do my part. (Did I stay within my five minutes?)
BIG BEND ART STUDIO has reopened, celebrating 35 years since 1980. Alice Knight's creativity in art, crafts, and music is again available at FM Hwy 170 and Terlingua Creek Bridge.
For one dollar, the "Desert Opry" Cantina offers fresh, hot, single-serve choices from Keurig, Starbucks, Green Mountain, Donut Shop, and Celestial, along with snacks, cold sodas, juices and water.
The "Desert Opry" Stage will feature both local and regional singers-songwriters in a house concert format and the "Desert Opry Players" house band. All events are BYOB, including regular campfire circles.
Beads are featured in the "Treasure Trove" available in strand or loose, with supplies, tools, findings and a place to create jewelry products.
The "Shelf Room" includes Alice's pottery, mixed media creations, framed and matted prints, and southwestern theme textiles. Also, cactus and succulents are being grown for sale and organic gardening is underway again. Since the October 1st reopening, Jack Knight reports visitors including travelers from Europe, Canada, Mexico, and all over the US, as well as local folks from Presidio, Marfa, Alpine, BBNP and South Brewster County.

In these classes you will learn short processes (lessons) designed to give you more options to sit in a dynamic way and to improve your coordination as you go from standing to sitting and the reverse. Movements learned in these processes emphasize the transmission of force throughout the skeleton, which is essential for bone strength.

AA is not affiliated with any religious organization but is grateful to the Big Bend Church (north of the post office) for allowing us to meet there. Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. . Anyone who has a desire to stop drinking or remain sober is welcome. Literature is available in our local library. Tears from the Moon, to the River to the Sea.
Our hearts go out to the family, loved ones, and the many friends of
Doug and Markus, forever lost to us all
in an incomprehensible,
and sudden tragedy.
Saturday morning, December 6th, two long-time locals and beloved friends and family were killed in a car crash. Their vehicle was struck by a Jeep that had run a stop sign; a third vehicle, an 18-wheeler, was involved in the wreck, as well. Doug Irwin and his son Markus Irwin were killed instantly, as was the driver of the Jeep.
From Beth Garcia: “ There was a period of five years, from June of 2003 until June of 2008 when I had the privilege to work with Terlingua’s kids. Markus was one of the kids who made it magic. Every. Single. Day. He had a grin that was infectious and an innocence that was everything wonderful about children. Markus was the most resilient child you can imagine. No matter what happened in his life, he would pick himself up and continue on. He was a child who intended to live with his attention turned towards the good. Following the tradition of young Markus Irwin, I will pick myself up and continue to move forward in my life. May you rest in true peace, beautiful child.” He truly was a very unique child and young man.
Doug Irwin was a dedicated father to son Markus, and a dedicated husband to his wife Debbie. He was also a gifted guitar player and singer, and a natural comedian.
We are told that father and son are to be cremated, and ashes
scattered at the river Tuesday, December 16th around 1p.m.;
we do not know the exact location, however. Herman Everett
is Markus’ Godfather, and relative of Doug and Markus’ family.
Herman will likely know of plans as they develop. This editor
presumes to speak for all who loved Doug and Markus, that our
hearts are crushed with the loss of these two. Our love and
support goes out to Doug’s wife, Markus’ Step-Mother Deb.
To Markus’ Mother Carissa, Grandmother Mona and Uncle Scott
and his family; to Markus’ closest, life-long friend Patrick. And,
to Herman and all the hundreds of relatives, and friends that
will grieve the loss of Doug and Markus. Condolences may be

We seriously hope that no news has been inadvertently left out this week. This Moon was a particularly difficult one to think through and write.
Saturday morning, December 6th, two long-time locals and beloved friends and family were killed in a car crash. Their vehicle was struck by a Jeep that had run a stop sign; a third vehicle, an 18-wheeler, was involved in the wreck, as well. Doug Irwin and his son Markus Irwin were killed instantly, as was the driver of the Jeep.
From Beth Garcia: “ There was a period of five years, from June of 2003 until June of 2008 when I had the privilege to work with Terlingua’s kids. Markus was one of the kids who made it magic. Every. Single. Day. He had a grin that was infectious and an innocence that was everything wonderful about children. Markus was the most resilient child you can imagine. No matter what happened in his life, he would pick himself up and continue on. He was a child who intended to live with his attention turned towards the good. Following the tradition of young Markus Irwin, I will pick myself up and continue to move forward in my life. May you rest in true peace, beautiful child.” He truly was a very unique child and young man.
Doug Irwin was a dedicated father to son Markus, and a dedicated husband to his wife Debbie. He was also a gifted guitar player and singer, and a natural comedian.
We are told that father and son are to be cremated, and ashes
scattered at the river Tuesday, December 16th around 1p.m.;
we do not know the exact location, however. Herman Everett
is Markus’ Godfather, and relative of Doug and Markus’ family.
Herman will likely know of plans as they develop. This editor
presumes to speak for all who loved Doug and Markus, that our
hearts are crushed with the loss of these two. Our love and
support goes out to Doug’s wife, Markus’ Step-Mother Deb.

Following the ceremony, we will proceed to the Rio Grande by Lajitas to spread the ashes. Funeral Chapel was filled to beyond standing room only - and spilled to
the outside . Many, many of Markus' school friends were among those in

Douglas
Patrick Irwin, age 43, of Big Spring, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014,
due to a car accident in Andrews County, Texas.
He was
born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on March 17, 1971, to Billy Gene Irwin and Velma
Correne Stidham. He worked as an oilfield mechanic for Best Services.
Doug was a
feisty redneck and a hard working man who was often seen wearing a hard hat. A
country boy, he loved wearing boots and cowboy hats and played guitar, singing
old country songs. Doug is
survived by his wife of six years, Georganna (King) Irwin of Big Spring; son,
Dallas Irwin of Florida; daughter,Tonya Hunter of Odessa; brothers, Billy Gene
Irwin Jr. of Larose, La., and Bruce Irwin of Worcester, Mass.; and one
granddaughter, Payton Hunter of Odessa.
Tragically,
his son, Markus Irwin, was with Douglas in the car accident and both Doug and
Markus lost their lives.
Markus
Patrick “Boo” Irwin was born in Odessa on July 26, 1999, to Doug and Michelle
Carrisa Allen. He was a student, a sophomore at Coahoma High School.
Markus is
survived by his mother, Carissa Allen and husband Richard of Terlingua; sister,
Katherine Monica McLain of San Angelo; brother, Dallas William Irwin of
Florida; grandmother, Mona McAuley of Terlingua; step-mom, Georganna Irwin of
Big Spring; uncle, Scott Turner and wife Jennifer and their daughter Jessica,
all of Fort Davis; uncles, Billy Irwin and Bruce Irwin and Bruce’s daughter
Jennifer; cousins, Scott and Leticia Walters and their children, Matthew,
Dillon, Ashe, and Whitney; aunt, Alecia Deaver of Odessa and her children,
Brad, Robert, Aidan, and Kerry; best friend, Patrick Orona; and many other
extended family members.
Memorial
services for Doug and Markus will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at Acres
West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Chaplain Larry Hood.
ALSO: Tuesday, December 16th at 1 p.m. - The remaining ashes of father and son are to be scattered at the river Tuesday, December 16th around 1p.m.; we do not know the exact location, however. One Day at a Time in Terlingua
AA is not affiliated with any religious organization but is grateful to the Big Bend Church (north of the post office) for allowing us to meet there. Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. . Anyone who has a desire to stop drinking or remain sober is welcome. Literature is available in our local library. Big Bend National Park NEWS Release
Fatality at Big Bend National Park
A 55-year-old man from San Antonio died Saturday, Nov. 29, while hiking the Window Trail in Big Bend National Park, park officials announced.The man’s identity has not been released, pending notification of relatives.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. “We are truly saddened by this tragic death,” said Superintendent Cindy
Ott-Jones, “and offer our condolences to the family and friends.”
